Fresh call to build 25,000 social homes as Coalition vows to stimulate growth
The Coalition Government must commit to building 25,000 social homes as part of its pledge to ‘do everything it can do to stimulate growth’.

The call for a big house building push came after Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg vowed to maintain their commitment to tackling the deficit and promoting growth.

The two leaders staged the rare double appearance at a tractor factory in Basildon, Essex to reiterate their policies to support manufacturing and jobs creation.

The speeches were greeted with fresh calls from the housing industry to stimulate building, manufacturing and job creation in the UK.

Mike Leonard, director of the Modern Masonry Alliance, said: “At last it’s time for the Coalition to embrace our Plan B!

“The way out of this mess is to invest in 25,000 new social homes, RMI and infrastructure.

He said: “With 92 pence in every pound staying in the UK and every £1 generating £2.84 in economic activity there is no other option.”

“The time for clever cost free rhetoric is over we need to move fast to protect out building materials manufacturing capacity, create jobs and get back to growth,” urged Leonard.

Both leaders renewed their coalition government vows, pledging to work together to rebalance the economy.

Cameron insisted that he is listening to public anger at spending cuts, but said that securing the economic recovery “remains our guiding task”.

Clegg said they were both focused on what mattered most, people’s jobs and getting the economy moving.
