Government looks to accelerate £2.3bn affordable homes cash
The Government is understood to be looking at re-profiling the planned release of its four-year affordable housing programme.

The Homes and Communities Agency is reported to be in talks with the Department for Communities and Local Government about releasing cash earlier.

The move is a clear sign of growing unease about plummeting affordable housing starts, which has been heavily hit by spending cuts.

The affordable housing programme was planned to ease the pain of the Government ‘s£4bn housing spending cuts.

But it is presently loaded towards the end of 2015 with two thirds of the £2.3bn total spend in the last two years.

Earlier this week latest official figures showed that affordable housing starts in 2011/12 slumped 68% on the previous year. In the year to March just 15,698 affordable homes for rent or sale were started compared to 49,363 the year before.

Labour politicians attacked the figures warning that the Government policies were failing.

Housing Minister Grant Shapps this week confirmed there would be another wave of the affordable rent programme post-2015.

“No one can predict the future, but there’s likely to be another round of affordable housing and affordable rent.”
