Government troubleshooters to kickstart stalled housing scheme

The Government is planning to send 13 planning troubleshooters into local authorities to unlock stalled housing developments.

Under the plan hatched by communities secretary Eric Pickles hundreds of Section 106 planning agreements could be set for renegotiation. The planning experts will negotiate with developers where large housing projects have stalled because previous planning gain deals now make schemes uneconomic in the present economic climate.

Pickles is understood to believe there could be scope to revitalize schemes dragging tens of thousands of homes back into the housing pipeline.

Local authorities have granted planning permission for more than 480,000 plots in recent years.

Work has started at fewer than a third of these – just 136,700.

Projects have been scrapped at more than 81,000 sites and suspended or delayed at 226,000.

Mike Leonard, Director of the Modern Masonry Alliance, said: "This is a positive move, it is vital that we remove any barriers which are restricting the delivery of new homes.

"With funding and drive it is more than possible to build an additional 25000 public rented homes.

"This would make a huge difference to our economy creating jobs and growth.

"Failure to make this investment will result in more factories closing, companies going out of business and a catastrophic increase in lost jobs and the skills we need for the future.

"We must not delay we need to Get Britain Building now!"
